Hi, I'm Katrina Marie and I'll be your sewing instructor here at Kids Sewing. When I was just five years old, I began sketching and creating paper dolls. From there, I began working on doll cutouts, each with a collection of paper clothing that attached to the dolls magnetically. At 10, I created my first line of doll clothing and marketed it at a local craft show. It was so fun to buy the fabrics, create this line of doll clothing and package them I was hooked!

As a teenager, I began making clothes for myself and for my friends, and by the age of 18, I was sewing professionally for alteration shops, a costume shop, a theater, and a dance wear studio. Then, when I was 19, I started my own dress collection, designing historically inspired pieces. For the next 10 the years designed and made thousands of dresses, selling to customers all over the world. You can see my dress website at

In 2009, I started working on Kids Sewing DVDs which grew out of my love for sewing and my desire to share and teach children this incredibly valuable art. As both a mother and sewing teacher, it is such a wonderful feeling to share the experience of discovery with a child, watching as something comes to life in their hands, and seeing their faces light up when they finish a project they have worked hard to create. I'd love to have you join me on your sewing journey!

"I am a big fan of Katrina Marie’s approach on teaching beginner students how to sew and have led my kids though three of her courses. I also teach a sewing course for beginners at a local homeschool coop and was able to pass on the exercises she presents in the Intro to Sewing course to help them work on sewing a straight stitch. The girls enjoyed the exercise and were able to visualize their stitch to see where improvement was needed.

Katrina Marie uses a simple and fun approach that helps beginners work on a straight stitch, practice pivoting, and adjust their seam allowance as the exercise goes on. By the end of the projects you can see improvement over time. Using this method in my class really helped the girls understand how important it is to work on the most fundamental and challenging part of sewing (which is learning to handle the sewing machine and guide fabric properly).

My kids did the stitching practice tonight. My daughter (9) did the circle stitch exercise because it’s the most difficult, my older son (6) did the straight stitch exercise with me overseeing ((which he did really great, had to backstitch a few times to get back on track but he was really paying attention )), and my youngest son (4) did the thread art with my assistance :) I didn’t take a picture of the boys sewing since we only have the pink machine at home, the rest of my machines are at the coop :D

"I have a mom who can sew anything and is a wonderful seamstress. I did not inherit that gift! I was clueless as to how I was going to teach my kids (ages 7, 9, 12 and 14) to sew. This class was the perfect solution to my problem! It covers the basics of stitches, bobbins, tension and so much more.

They truly did enjoy every minute of it and want to continue doing things on the sewing machine. It probably helps that they are surrounded by grandmas who sew and do crafty things like that. The sewing machine they are using was my grandma's and she just passed away last week. I just realized today how much more it means to me now to see them on it!

I think in a way they see the machine as an "adult machine" and are all that more excited to learn to use something like that. My youngest (7) kept saying to me "Mom, I know how to do this, you don't have to watch me!" Made me laugh every time!"

"My daughter loved this course!! She was hesitant and somewhat afraid of the sewing machine in the beginning. But by the end of this sewing practice session, she was not only sewing the straight parts with confidence, but she was also handling the corners by herself -- something she was way too afraid to attempt previously.

But with this, she mastered it herself and did it all besides the first corner. She now feels so much more confident in her ability to use a sewing machine and to sew straight lines, curves, and corners. In fact, she's begging for the next practice session because she can't get enough. Thank you for this amazing practice course!!

It really is valuable! I honestly just had her do it so you would have pics and testimonial but now I would highly recommend it. I was surprised how much she learned from it and how much she loved it. I had to send pics to her grandma too!"
